The best blue MTG cards ever created include powerful Planeswalkers, legendary creatures like Ninjas and Merfolk, as well as countless iconic spells.
Read on below and discover why these X cards are far better than the rest!
Best Blue Planeswalkers
Planeswalkers are undoubtedly the most powerful of all blue card types:
Jace, Architect of Thought
The first card on our list is the Mythic Rare Planeswalker Jace, Architect of Thought. And, yes, ladies and gentlemen, there are three big reasons why he is on the top of our list.
His Planeswalker abilities include:
- Add 1 loyalty counter and, until the end of the turn whenever a creature owned by an opponent attacks, it gains -1/-0 until the end of the turn.
- Pay -2 loyalty counters and reveal the top 3 cards in your deck and let an opponent separate them into two piles, then put one pile in the bottom of your deck and the other in your hand.
- Pay -8 loyalty counters and search each opponent’s deck for a nonland card and exile it, then have each player shuffle their deck. You may play the exiled cards without paying their mana costs.
The fact that this non land permanent costs only four mana is just crazy.

Jace Beleren
Second on our list of Planeswalkers is Jace Beleren, another legendary Mythic Rare. His abilities are possibly even greater than most Planeswalkers from all five colors.
With this card on the board, you can:
- Add +2 loyalty counters and each player draws a card.
- Pay -1 loyalty counters and target player must draw a card (including yourself or others).
- Pay -10 loyalty counters and target players must put the top 20 cards of their deck into their graveyard.
Yes, you read that last ability correctly. Jace Bleren’s main ability is to mill 20 cards in one shot! What’s even better? The card costs less than four mana.

Loyalty Counters: 3
Rarity: Mythic Rare
Jace, Mirror Mage
The third item on our list is the blue mage version of Jace, the Mirror Mage. He may not be the first Planeswalker that pops into your mind when you think of the color blue, but he’s far more versatile than you ever imagined.
When this Planeswalker comes into play, if you pay CMC 2, you get a copy of Jace, Mirror Mage! The only difference is that it only comes into play with a single counter on it.
The cards loyalty counter activated abilities include:
- Add +1 loyalty counter and Scry 2 (look at the top two cards in your deck).
- Add or Pay 0 loyalty counters and draw a card and reveal it, then remove a number of loyalty counters equal to the card’s CMC from Jace, Mirror Mage.
Yes, that’s correct! This card DOES only have two abilities, rather than three like most Planeswalkers. That said, the copy you get to make could be considered the third ability. Either way, it is one of the most interesting blue mages in Magic’s history.
CMC: 3
Loyalty Counters: 4
Rarity: Mythic Rare
Jace, the Mind Sculptor
The last Jace Planeswalker on our list is the Mind Sculptor, another contender for the best legendary blue Planeswalker. He has a four mana cost, barely a mana drain to speak of even in the early game.
His abilities are:
- Add +2 loyalty counters and then look at the top card of a target player’s deck, you can place that card on the bottom of his or her deck.
- Add +0 loyalty counters and draw three cards then put two cards from your hand onto the top of your deck in any order.
- Pay -1 loyalty counters and return a target creature from the battlefield to its owner’s hand.
- Pay -12 loyalty counters and then exile all cards from a target player’s library and have that player shuffle their hand back into their deck.
That last ability? Yeah… you make their whole deck go bye-bye and whatever cards they had in their hand are now their entire deck. Good game, anyone?

Loyalty Counters: 3
Rarity: Mythic Rare
Kiora, the Crashing Wave
The very last Planeswalker on our list is Kiora, the Crashing Wave, a very special multicolored blue and green solid card.
The activated loyalty counter abilities of this card include:
- Add +1 and until your next turn, prevent all damage that would be dealt to or by target permanents of your opponents.
- Pay -1 and draw a card, then play an additional land this turn if you wish.
- Pay -5 and get an emblem with “at the beginning of your end step turn, you may put a 9/9 Kraken creature token into play.”
Wow! I’m having to double-check what I wrote and you just read. Uhhh, yep. It’s true, this card’s ability allows you to spawn a 9/9 Kraken creature token, quite possibly multiple times during the game.

Best Blue Legendary Creatures
Blue legendary creatures aren’t the strongest or the toughest, but their magic is more free-flowing than most:
Jace, Vyrn’s Prodigy
The first legendary creature on our list is Jace, Vyrn’s Prodigy. A rare Human Wizard, you can tap this guy and discard a card.
If there are 5 or more cards in your graveyard, exile this card and then return it to the battlefield transformed.
This may seem like a broken card, but after you play with it, you’ll see how creature capable this Human Wizard really is.
CMC: 2
Power/Toughness: 0/2
Rarity: Mythic Rare
Baral, Chief of Compliance
Baral, Chief of Compliance is a Human Wizard of Rare status. His mana cost is super low for his usefulness and works wonders in Commander format.
When he is played, and on the field, your Instants and Sorcery spells cost 1 CMC less to cast. It may not grant you infinite mana, but it does allow you to play one mana non creature spell cards for zero mana.
Further, when you counter a spell, with a spell or ability, you may draw a card and discard a card.
CMC: 2
Power/Toughness: 1/3
Rarity: Rare
Johnny, Combo Player
This rare legendary creature is a Human Gamer, Johnny Combo Player. Pay 4 CMC and search your deck for any card you wish and then put it into your hand. Afterward, shuffle your deck and move along!
His power level doesn’t take a deep analysis to tell that he’s a weenie but has a super helpful Scry-like ability as you clearly see!
At any rate, it’s a great card for picking up extra cards and not just any cards. If you want to search for your best creature, go for it!
CMC: 4
Power/Toughness: 1/1
Rarity: Rare
Kaho, Minamo Historian
The next up on our list is the Human Wizard Kaho, Minao Historian. When he comes into play, you search your deck and 3 Instants and remove them from the game. You also get to shuffle your deck as well.
In constructed formats, like Commander, this card excels especially in the mid to late game.
The main card advantage of it is: pay X mana cost and tap this card to play another card with CMC equal to X removed from the game without paying its cost.
CMC: 4
Power/Toughness: 2/2
Rarity: Rare
God-Eternal Kefnet
This Mythic Rare card is a fan favorite among black and blue players, God-Eternal Kefnet, a Zombie God. The 4/5 legendary creature has Flying and some super cool abilities. You definitely want to see this guy in your opening hand and not an opponent’s hand.
Basically, you get to reveal cards, as you draw them, and copy and cast them if they are cheap enough.
Also, when this big guy kicks the bucket or is exiled, it goes back into its owner’s deck third card down from the top.
CMC: 4
Power/Toughness: 4/5
Rarity: Mythic Rare
Thada Adel, Acquisitor
This legendary Merfolk Rogue, Thada Adel, Acquisitor is one of the best mono blue cards in the game. That last statement has a lot to do with the fact that it has Island walk, and low three mana cost.
Further, whenever this card deals damage to a player, you get to search the player’s deck and exile an artifact card from it. Not to mention it barely costs any mana for what it’s worth.
After playing this card’s major ability, the opponent must shuffle and you may play the exiled card, but only until the end of the turn.

Power/Toughness: 2/2
Rarity: Text.
Best Blue Creatures
Blue creatures are deceptively magical, most of them seem weak on first glance, with only a few cards stronger than 5/5 or 6/6:
Scourge of Fleets
The first blue creature card on our list is a big one, the Kraken Scourge of Fleets. When this big boy comes into play, return creatures your opponent’s control with X toughness or less to its owner’s hand, X being the number of Islands you own.
Abilities aside, this creature is capable of going head-to-head with heavy hitters like Giants, the Man o War, Shark Typhoon, and Leviathans.
Your opponents will wish for cards like Primal Tide and Mind’s Desire as well as five life extra for their counters every time it’s your turn with this guy on the board.
CMC: 7
Power/Toughness: 6/6
Rarity: Rare
Inkwell Leviathan
Perhaps one of the biggest and baddest of all creatures in the game, let alone among mono blue cards, is the Artifact Creature Inkwell Leviathon. The card has Trample, Islandwalk, and Shroud, plus it’s a 7/11… need we really say more?
The only drawback to this creature is the massive amount of mana it requires to cast. Not six mana, not seven mana, but a whopping nine mana!
We wouldn’t be surprised if this card is eventually banned from legal play.
CMC: 9
Power/Toughness: 7/11
Rarity: Rare
Body Double
Body Double is a Shapeshifter creature that takes the form of any creature card in a graveyard, making it one of the most unpredictable and powerful five mana cards in the game. It’s a real wildcard, to say the least.
This isn’t a card you want to see pop up in an opponent’s deck, especially if they already have other clones. Especially if you have a big ol’ creature in your graveyard.
CMC: 5
Power/Toughness: 0/0
Rarity: Rare
Jace’s Mindseeker
Another Jace-related card, this Fish Illusion creature, Jace’s Mindseeker is more than formidable in any deck with enough blue mana cards to pay the casting cost. When the card comes into play, a target opponent puts five top cards of their deck into their graveyard.
It may be a bit of a mana drain, but the fun part about it is that you can play Instants or Sorceries from said cards without paying their casting cost.
CMC: 6
Power/Toughness: 4/4
Rarity: Rare
Quicksilver Dragon
Quicksilver Dragon is a Dragon creature (duh) with Flying (double-duh). The creature card is rare, measure up to 5/5, and has Morph (CMC 5).
Also, if you pay 1 blue mana you can redirect a spell singularly targeted at this creature to another creature on the board.
Against a blue or red deck, this card is worth more than a Gilded Drake, Snapcaster Mage, and Treasure Cruise put together(disclaimer: that’s just our opinion!)
CMC: 6
Power/Toughness: 5/5
Rarity: Rare
Murmuring Mystic
Another excellent Human Wizard to consider adding to your next blue deck is Murmuring Mystic. Whenever you cast an Instant spell or Sorcery, you may create a 1/1 blue Bird Illusion creature token (with flying).
This non land permanent is sort of like having infinite mana to cast spells that create Bird creature tokens. On its worst day, it is better than a Power Artifact card.
CMC: 4
Power/Toughness: 1/5
Rarity: Uncommon
Glacial Wall
A more beloved blue creature defender never existed, Glacial Wall is the most iconic blue defender ever printed by Wizards of the Coast. As far as blockers go, very few, of any color, come even close to the basic toughness of this Wall.
In our opinion? This card could cost five mana and it would still be worth it.
CMC: 3
Power/Toughness: 0/7
Rarity: Common
Ninja of the Deep Hours
When it comes to wham-bam-thank-you-mam type tactics that leave the opponent scratching their head and struggling to understand what just happened, few cards do a better job than Ninja of the Deep Hours.
It has Ninjitsu (CMC 2) and whenever it deals combat damage to a player, you get a card draw bonus ability kicking in at instant speed.
Unless the opponent happens to have a great glass spinner, Ancestral Recall, and Merchant Scroll, as well as Time Walk and Cryptic Command, they may just give up when they see these Ninjas popping onto the field.
CMC: 4
Power/Toughness: 2/2
Rarity: Uncommon
Mistblade Shinobi
The Mistblade Shinobi Human Ninja creature card is another Ninja with Ninjitsu (CMC 2). When this card deals damage to a player, you may return one of that player’s creatures to its owner’s hand at instant speed.
Brace yourself for opponents complaining about this most broken card, simply because it leaves them with an empty hand and looking for a way out.
CMC: 3
Power/Toughness: 1/1
Rarity: Common
Best Blue Instants and Sorceries
Instants and Sorcery spells are among the most impressive of all the best blue cards:
Counterspell
One of the most iconic of all blue spells in MTG, Counterspell is a card that everyone both loves and hates. If you’re playing against blue mages, few two mana cast spells are so potent. Pay two mana and you may counter any target spell.
Type: Instant
CMC: 2
Rarity: Common
Clone Legion
This Mythic Rare sorcery is a real treat: for every creature a player controls put a token onto the battlefield that’s a copy of that creature. Yes, you read that right. You get to clone an entire legion of the enemy’s creatures!
Mass manipulation anyone? Imagine the enemy having two creatures like Glen Elendra Archmage and the Zombie God Kefnaet… GG!
Type: Sorcery
CMC: 9
Rarity: Mythic Rare
Thought Scour
Another classic card advantage of blue is the Instant Thought Scour: the target player puts the top two cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard and then you enjoy a card draw bonus of +1. Cards are available in limited formats.
Type: Instant
CMC: 1
Rarity: Rare
Learn from the Past
The Instant, Learn from the Past, is a unique blue spell that allows you to accomplish two objectives with one cast: a target player shuffles their graveyard into their hand (including yourself, or an enemy).
Type: Instant
CMC: 4
Rarity: Uncommon
Temporal Manipulation
Another excellent example of the power of blue Sorcery cards is Temporal Manipulation. It simply allows you to take an extra turn after the one you are currently on. Hence, it is most definitely a Mythic Rare card.
Type: Sorcery
CMC: 5
Rarity: Mythic Rare
Aetherize
The next card on our list is another famous one, Aetherize the Uncommon blue Instant. It allows you to reutn all attacking creatures to their owner’s hand. A most useful ability! For four mana? Ding, ding, ding. Let’s get it on.
Type: Instant
CMC: 4
Rarity: Uncommon
Brainstorm
Brainstorm is about as vintage as it gets when it comes to powerfully awesome old blue Instants. It enables you to draw 3 cards, take two cards from your current hand, and put them back onto the top of your deck however you want to order them.
Type: Instant
CMC: 1
Rarity: Uncommon
Mystical Tutor
The Mystical Tutor is another classic example of the prestige and prowess of older blue magic spells. You get to search your deck for an Instant, Interrupt, mana source, or Sorcery card, and reveal it to all players in the game. Shuffle your deck, and put the card on top of the deck.
Type: Instant
CMC: 1
Rarity: Common
Mana Leak
Mana Leak is the last of the blue Instants and Sorceries on our list. This one is so old, it is technically an Interrupt card, which just means that it has the ability to be cast with Instant speed.
When you play it, counter target spell unless its caster pays an additional CMC 3. For two mana? Ridiculous power!
Type: Interrupt
CMC: 2
Rarity: Common
Best Blue Enchantments and Auras
Enchantment and Aura type blue cards are incredibly tricky:
Jace’s Erasure
The first blue Enchantment on our list is a Jace card, Jace’s Erasure. This one allows you to mill a card from your opponents into their graveyard from the top of their dek each time you draw a card.
Type: Enchantment
CMC: 2
Rarity: Common
Curse of the Bloody Tome
Curse of the Bloody Tome is one of the hottest blue Chantment Auras ever made. It actually enchants a player, rather than a creature or permanent. The ability is cruel: the player must mill two cards into their graveyard, from the top of their deck each turn.
Type: Enchantment Aura
CMC: 3
Rarity: Common
Coastal Piracy
This old Enchantment is a great one, though a bit dated it still gets the job done. When a creature you own deals damage to an opponent, you get to draw a card. For four mana, the drawing ability is well worth it.
Type: Enchantment
CMC: 4
Rarity: Uncommon
Trail of Evidence
The Trail of Evidence card is an Uncommon blue Enchantment. Whenever you cast an Instant or Sorcery spell, you may investigate. That means you get to make a token, sacrifice it, and draw a card!
Type: Enchantment
CMC: 3
Rarity: Uncommon
False Demise
This Enchantment card is strictly for use on creatures, hence the name False Demise. When the enchanted creature goes to the graveyard, it controls to play as it were, except the enchantment is removed.
Type: Enchant Creature
CMC: 3
Rarity: Uncommon
Crab Umbra
The Crab Umbra is a powerful blue Aura that belongs to the Umbra Enchantment set. When this card attaches to a creature, the creature has “pay 2 colorless and 1 blue mana to untap said creature.”
Type: Enchantment Aura
CMC: 1
Rarity: Uncommon
Eel Umbra
The last Enchantment on our list is the Eel Umbra, another of the Enchantments belonging to the Umbra set. It has Flash and grants a +1/+1 to the creature it enchants.
Type: Enchantment Aura
CMC: 2
Rarity: Common
Best Blue Artifacts and Equipment
Although Artifacts and Equipment are technically colorless, the following cards work wonders with blue cards:
Skullclamp
Skullclamp is an oldie but a goodie, in fact, with most blue decks, it’s practically a must-have for Artifact Equipment. It gives a creature it enchants +1/-1, and when the creature dies, you draw two cards.
Type: Artifact Equipment
CMC: 1
Rarity: Uncommon
Panharmonicon
Next on our list of Artifacts and Equipment that work well with blue cards is the Panharmonicon. All ETG abilities are triggered twice rather than once, each time they are triggered.
Type: Artifact
CMC: 4
Rarity: Rare
Thousand-Year Elixir
The Thousand-Year Elixir is a Rare Artifact all serious players would do well to include in a blue deck or two. You have to read it a few times before it sinks in. The obvious ability is that you can untap a target creature.
Type: Artifact
CMC: 3
Rarity: Rare
Sword of Kaldra
The Sword of Kaldra may not be the first piece of Equipment you think about putting in a blue deck, but maybe it should be. Costing 4 CMC to equip, the creature that wields the equipment receives a +5/+5 and gains the ability to remove creatures from the game when it deals them damage.
Type: Legendary Artifact Equipment
CMC: 4
Rarity: Rare
Masterwork of Ingenuity
This next item on our list is a real special one, you may want to read it twice and let its ability sink in. You may have it enter the game as a copy of any equipment on the field.
Type: Artifact Equipment
CMC: 1
Rarity: Rare
Lightning Greaves
