Types of MTG Arena Codes

MTG Arena Pack Codes

When you buy booster packs for Magic Online (via MTG Arena), and other MTG products online, they always come with some free Magic the Gathering Arena codes.

For Magic the Gathering Arena fans, purchasing MTG Arena packs is hands-down the best way to get great cards and a code or two for online use.

The purchase of these Arena packs includes redemption codes for individual cards, planeswalkers, cosmetics, booster packs, and even entire decks.

This type of code typically has an expiration date of a year or two (from the time they are first released) but could expire much sooner. That said, when you happen to come across them, they could already be about to expire.

MTG Sealed “Paper” Product Codes

Buying sealed paper products, including Planeswalkers decks, various theme Decks, MTG Booster Packs, various Theme-Based Starter Kits is the best way to get free MTG Arena codes.

For example, right now, if you buy either Forgotten Realms Booster Packs or Midnight Hunt Booster Packs, you receive a reward that is redeemable for 3 online booster packs.

Further, you may even get some codes free booster packs, giveaways, and other Magic the Gathering prizes via local stores and live events, when purchasing paper products.

Most of these codes are redeemable as exact copies of paper products (mainly cards, planeswalkers, and decks). If you want to build a carbon copy of your physical deck, on MTG Arena, these are the codes you’ll need to use.

However, the issue with sealed paper MTG products is that if you buy older stuff, the codes may already be expired.

For example, if you buy a planeswalker deck from 2018, in 2022, the code is more than likely already expired for a year or more.

That said, many paper products also come with unique codes which have no expiration date.

Unique Promotional Codes

From time to time, Magic the Gathering Arena puts out special promo codes along with the release of new series, expansions, tournaments, or product lines. Most of the time the MTG arena promo codes are much more time-sensitive and need to be used immediately.

For example, Wizards release an Arena promo or another various type of unique code for a pre release or as a reward for creating a fresh account. These are amongst the easiest free codes to score.

The last thing you want to see is “expired yesterday” when you go to enter your free MTG arena promo codes. Promo codes may expire in as little as months, rather than in a year or two like major promos.

Promotional codes are redeemable for everything from uncommon and rare cards to 15-card booster packs and cosmetic upgrades for your already existing Magic the Gathering Arena cards.

Sometimes unique promo codes are even good for personalized stuff like two random cosmetics at once, which really helps your decks stand out from the rest.

Exclusive Codes via Email

If you play MTG Arena, make sure to sign up with an active email that you can log into regularly in order to check for and redeem exclusive codes.

They don’t show up often, but when MTG arena promo codes do pop into your inbox, it is often without warning. There is no order, schedule, or notice when exclusive email rewards are released to players.

Exclusive codes should be redeemed right away because these free MTG arena codes tend to expire quickly. Like promotional codes, exclusive codes may run out within weeks or months, so don’t dilly dally with redeeming them.

This type of code is redeemable for single cards, booster packs, whole decks, cosmetics, and much more. From time to time, these email-based rewards are even redeemable for death packs.

All things considered, if you have less than two decks, this sort of code reward is exactly what you need to help you build your collection.

Direct Purchase Codes

Another great way to get your hands on some MTG Arena codes is to simply buy them directly. Out of all the methods currently available for procuring them, purchasing them directly is by far the quickest and easiest. Taking this route also gives you the ability to choose what rewards the codes redeem for.

At the very least, if you buy Magic the Gathering Arena products online, you’ll receive at least one code with any purchase. That said, many local stores and online retailers offer direct purchase codes for sale as well (so don’t forget to ask around at the local Magic shop!).

Keep in mind, when you do purchase a code online directly, there is a high chance you’ll score some additional MTG Arena promo codes too, which makes the deal even sweeter.

Further, purchasing a code directly allows you to pick and choose exactly what you want, from spark packs to basic lands and everything in between.

Looking for codes that redeem as a planeswalker deck? No problem. Want to upgrade your mastery tree, or use a stained glass card style? Done!

Whether it’s an individual card, something aesthetic like card sleeves, or even a mythic rare planeswalker, you can bet your bottom dollar that there’s a direct purchase code for it.

Cosmetic Codes

This popular type of code comes in booster packs and often shows up as an MTG Arena promo code in other paper and digital MTG products.

A cosmetic code, after redeemed, allows you to give your cards a bit of personality. This includes various skins as well as alternative art schemes for cards too.

That way, your cards, and decks stand out from basic decks made up with simple standard cards, boxes, and sleeves.

Even more, these codes may also include redeemable card sleeves, which allow you to further customize your Magic the Gathering Arena setup.

Keep in mind that because they are one of the most common types of MTG Arena code, Wizards tends to release codes like these far more than other types. That means if you keep an eye out for them, you’ll be able to redeem the newest free codes as often as every several months. It also means that when you’re checking to see if your codes worked, they may be expired already.

Planeswalker Deck Codes

When you buy a planeswalker, whether a digital copy or a physical card, there is a good chance it includes a free code for an exact clone of the card.

The current list includes:

Dovin Architect of Law (clone of the deck )

Domri, City Smasher (clone of the deck)

Gideon, the Oathsworn (clone of the deck)

Jace, Arcane Strategist (clone of the deck)

Throne of Eldraine Decks (clone of the deck)

Theros Beyond Death Decks (clone of the deck)

Ral, Caller of Storms (clone of the deck)

Vraska, Regal Gorgon (clone of the deck)

Mythic rare Planeswalkers are only released by Wizards of the Coast LLC every so often, not nearly as regularly as new legendary creatures and other rare cards. That means there are fewer passwords floating around for Planeswalkers, so use them while you can!

It’s also important to mention that Planeswalkers are among the most powerful and diverse cards in the entire Magic universe. That means the more digital Planeswalker cards you have, the more unstoppable you become (regardless of your card style).

Experience Codes

This particular sort of code isn’t always available for MTGA. When they are, you should use them as quickly as possible!

There is currently only one available:

LevelUp (2,000 XP – expires on an unknown date)

Cosmetic Codes

MTG Cosmetic Codes

These are easily the most beloved sort of code for genuine MTG Arena fans. That’s because they allow you to personalize your individual cards and decks by changing their cosmetics (with skins and alternate art).

WRITTENINSTONE (Nahiri, Storm of Stone card style – expires Jan 1, 2023)

ENLIGHTENME (Narset, Parter of Veils card style – expires Jan 1, 2023)

FNMATHOME (2 random cosmetics – expires on an unknown date)

As with MTG Arena Pack Codes, coming by a fresh cosmetic code isn’t at all uncommon. That said, you should definitely redeem these magic pack rewards asap. Even better, the more free cosmetic rewards you redeem, the more your account stands out from the pack!

Card Sleeve Codes

These are good for customizing the way your cards look, by adding a uniform set of sleeves to your deck. Card sleeves stand out in gameplay, giving your deck a more unique appearance.

The current list includes the following codes:

ArtClub (Prismari Sleeve – expires on an unknown date)

DebateDuelists (Silverquill Sleeve – expires on an unknown date)

MathWhizzes (Quandrix Sleeve – expires on an unknown date)

RockJocks (Lorehold Sleeve – expires on an unknown date)

SwampPunks (Witherbloom Sleeve – expires on an unknown date)

The card sleeve code is another rarer type, as they aren’t often released by MTG Arena and are never found in booster packs. When you do find one, enter it into your MTG Arena dashboard as quickly as possible!

Frequently Asked Questions About MTG Arena Codes

Do All Magic Cards Come with Arena Codes?

All MTG cards do not come with codes for MTGA. For example, cards received from booster packs do not have a code of any sort.

Likewise, if you purchase individual cards, in person or online, they do not include an MTG Arena promo code either.

In fact, there are fewer Magic products that include a code than those that do not come with them.

Do MTG Booster Packs Have a Code for Arena?

Booster packs are one of the most popular MTG paper products, but they do not include a code for MTG Arena. You won’t find even one code in an entire box of standard booster packs.

That said, one exception to this rule is if you purchase booster packs for online use only (via MTGA).

These purchases may include free MTG Arena promo codes, unlike physical paper booster packs.

What Magic Decks Have a Code?

The number of decks that have a redeemable code is constantly changing. At any given time there may be as many as a dozen decks that may have active codes.

Above, we’ve listed the Magic decks that have a code that is currently active (spoiler: most of them are planeswalker decks right now).

If you do come across an active promo for a full Magic deck, redeem the code immediately as it will turn from an active promotion to an expired code within days, weeks, or months.

Where Do I Enter a Code MTGA?

You may redeem codes by logging into MTG Arena and clicking on the Code Redemption button. Alternatively, you may now redeem codes via the MTG Arena app as well.

Just keep in mind that they are case sensitive, so take care to enter them correctly.

Also, keep in mind that most of them are time-sensitive as well. So, make sure you get them redeemed in time before they turn into expired codes!

A Final Word About Magic the Gathering Arena Codes

Besides standard booster packs and older Magic products (anything two or three years old, or older isn’t likely to contain a code that’s still active), buying most paper products these days gives you a fair chance of finding a code for Magic the Gathering Arena.

You can also find promo codes in digital products, in your email, and on websites that sell Wizards of the Coast products. Further, no matter what your card style is, there is an MTGA code for you. From what cards you have, including Planeswalkers and other Mythic Rare cards, to how your cards look, including how their sleeves and deck box appear.

Hopefully, we’ve answered all of your questions about how to score the MTGA code you’re looking for! That said, be sure to check back often and score free packs of codes!
