What are Fetch Lands and Why Should You Use Them?

If you ever play with a multi-color deck, you might have run into the problem of not having enough mana of a particular color to cast a spell you need.

Fetch lands help resolve that issue. What they do is allow you to pay 1 life and search for two lands to add to your battlefield.

The reason this is so powerful is twofold: you get the land you need, and in doing so you remove one land from your library. This narrows the chances of you drawing into a land in the future when you may need something else.

For the sake of this article, we’re defining fetch lands as the ten valuable cards that permit you to search for one of two land types at the cost of one life.

However, some people define fetch lands as lands that let players sacrifice them to search their library for a specific basic land type. This would include cards like Terramorphic Expanse.

Our definition, on the other hand, includes the following cards:

    • Arid Mesa
    • Bloodstained Mire
    • Flooded Strand
    • Marsh Flats
    • Misty Rainforest
    • Polluted Delta
    • Scalding Tarn
    • Verdant Catacombs
    • Windswept Heath
    • Wooded Foothills

MTG Sets with Fetch Lands and Which Ones They Have

The fetch lands on our list are prized and powerful cards. They would make a good addition to just about any collection.

So which sets can you find them in?

You’re have the potential to pull one of the ten fetch lands from packs of these sets:

    • Khans of Tarkir
    • Fate Reforged
    • Modern Masters 2017
    • Onslaught
    • Zendikar
    • Battle for Zendiker
    • Oath of the Gatewatch

The specific fetch lands you can get from each set varies, though. If you’re looking for a specific one and want to buy a booster box or pack from that set, we’ve provided a list of which set contains which fetch lands below.

This was an extremely popular set for a variety of reasons. In addition to getting plenty of legendary creatures and tri-color cards, though, you can also potentially find the following fetch lands in Khans of Tarkir packs:

    • Bloodstained Mire
    • Flooded Strand
    • Polluted Delta
    • Wooded Foothills
    • Windswept Heath

Want something a little more affordable than Khans of Tarkir, but with a similar possibility of getting fetch lands? You could try Fate Reforged, which contains the chance of pulling these fetch lands that originally come from the Khans of Tarkir set:

    • Bloodstained Mire
    • Flooded Strand
    • Polluted Delta
    • Wooded Foothills
    • Windswept Heath

Compared with some others on this list, Modern Masters 2017 is a more expensive investment. However, that’s because it’s an overall strong set, and there are quite a few other rare cards to pull than just fetch lands.

But those searching for fetch lands could potentially get these from Modern Masters 2017 packs:

    • Arid Mesa
    • Marsh Flats
    • Misty Rainforest
    • Scalding Tarn
    • Verdant Catacombs

As an older set, Onslaught booster boxes and packs have significant value. In addition to fetch lands, you could possibly get something like Mana Echoes.

    Onslaught includes these fetch lands:

    • Bloodstained Mire
    • Flooded Strand
    • Polluted Delta
    • Windswept Heath
    • Wooded Foothills

One of the reasons Zendikar is such a valuable set is its abundance of fetch lands and powerhouse cards. You could potentially draw cards like Oracle of Mul Daya from it, which makes boxes for Zendikar hard to find and expensive.

These are the fetch lands you could potentially pull from a Zendikar booster pack:

    • Arid Mesa
    • Marsh Flats
    • Misty Rainforest
    • Scalding Tarn
    • Verdant Catacombs

With Battle For Zendikar, you get the potential to find even more fetch lands than usual. The ones printed for Zendikar Expeditions are in some of the packs, which includes:

    • Arid Mesa
    • Bloodstained Mire
    • Flooded Strand
    • Marsh Flats
    • Misty Rainforest
    • Polluted Delta
    • Scalding Tarn
    • Verdant Catacombs
    • Windswept Heath
    • Wooded Foothills

With Oath of the Gatewatch, you have the same array of fetch lands to pull from as with Battle for Zendikar. Both sets have the possibility of getting Zendikar Expeditions fetch lands, which are the following:

    • Arid Mesa
    • Bloodstained Mire
    • Flooded Strand
    • Marsh Flats
    • Misty Rainforest
    • Polluted Delta
    • Scalding Tarn
    • Verdant Catacombs
    • Windswept Heath
    • Wooded Foothills

    Wrap Up

With that in mind, it’s worth noting that each of the above sets only gives you the possibility of pulling a fetch land. You’re not guaranteed to get one in every booster pack or box.

As a general rule, it’s better to buy the individual card itself when you’re looking for a specific card. If you buy a pack or box, you’re not guaranteed to get that one card you’re looking for.

Alternatively, if you just want to open a bunch of packs with the possibility of getting a valuable card, or want to buy a lot at once to grow your collection, booster boxes are a great option.
